An SUV driven by a New York woman was charged and struck by a moose in northern Franklin County as she tried to drive around the animal early Thursday.

Around 1:30 a.m. Cpl. Nathan Reid received a report of a car and moose collision on Loon Lake Road in Dallas Plantation, according to a release from Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols.

The driver, Rita Tempel, of Bellport, N.Y., told Reid the moose was standing in the road and would not move out of the way. She reported that she tried to slowly drive her 2012 Toyota Highlander around the moose.

“However, at that point the moose charged the car, ramming the side, causing reportable damage to the vehicle,” said Nichols.

Tempel reported the moose then walked off into the woods. She was not hurt during the incident.
