STARKS — In addition to appropriating money for road repairs in areas damaged by a serious July thunderstorm, Stark residents will be asked Wednesday to raise an additional $11,273 for road repairs not related to the storm, fire department money and large-item trash pickup.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Starks Community Center.

“We’re asking to use some unexpended money from other road accounts and also to raise a small amount of money for unanticipated things that have arisen since town meeting,” said First Selectman Paul Frederic. “Any item that will possibly raise money for taxation we need to have solidified this month.”

In March, the Starks Fire Department held an open house to recruit more volunteers after the number of active firefighters had dwindled to three people. As numbers have grown, the department needs more funding for equipment and training, said Frederic.

Residents will be asked to approve an additional $3,600 for the department on Wednesday.

They are also being asked to raise $7,000 for large-item trash pickup, including furniture, tires and other large items of trash. There is also an article asking residents to approve raising $673 for interest on a loan that officials did not bring up at the regular town meeting in March.

If approved, the impact of the additional money on the tax rate should be small and probably less than 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, said Frederic.
