The state of Maine has mandated one Certified Nursing Assistant for every five patients during the day. My wife is currently in long-term care at a local nursing home. The section she is in has 28 patients, which means six CNAs on the floor for this the period. I have never seen more than four, and much of the time there are three and sometimes as few as two. The nursing home is going to tell you that besides the CNAs, there is a charge nurse and a med, tech, and these two are counted in the mix. However, this is not what the mandate says.

The nursing home will also not tell you the fourth CNA and sometimes the third work from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. and then leave the floor. If you think your loved one is being cared for properly, you may want to take a hard look at their situation. How can the state allow this situation to go on?
