AUGUSTA — A man caught in the act of stealing copper pipe from a vacant building in Waterville’s South End on July 6 will spend 40 months behind bars for that offense.

Sean A. Rancourt, 29, of Waterville, was captured inside the building after a neighbor called police to say she saw what appeared to be flashlights in the basement.

Waterville Police reported finding Rancourt hiding under debris in the attic and Kevin Daniel Hubert, 32, also of Waterville, hiding under the basement stairs at 7 Summer St. along with tools and cut lengths of copper. The two were charged with burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and possession of burglar’s tools.

Rancourt pleaded guilty recently in Kennebec County Superior Court to the charge of aggravated criminal mischief, and the other two charges were dismissed in exchange for the plea. He was ordered to pay $1,000 restitution for the damage.

Charges remain pending against Hubert, whose next court hearing is Dec. 2.

Rancourt was on probation because of a 2003 robbery conviction, so the new sentence will run at the same time as a 45-month probation revocation.
