Dana Wilde, in his Backyard Naturalist column on Oct. 9, notes “a certain slant of light on autumn afternoons …” In 1861 Emily Dickinson also remarked on “a certain Slant of light, Winter Afternoons.”

Mr. Wilde, it seems, encounters this phenomenon earlier in the change of seasons than Ms. Dickinson.
