Maine is a hotbed for the local foods movement. Between 2007 and 2012, the number of young farmers in Maine rose by 40 percent, and it seems like everyone you meet is a locavore.
My husband and I raise organic hogs and field crops in Whitefield. We know from 10 years’ experience in the business that social enthusiasm alone does not create a healthy industry. There are more good words than dollars going around on the local foods circuit.
That’s why I support Sen. Chris Johnson, D-Somerville, for the Maine State Senate. He doesn’t just pay lip service to Maine agriculture. He has taken the time to meet specifically with farmers in his district to hear their concerns, and he has sponsored bills like L.D. 1431 to offer us meaningful support. I thank him for his work on local food issues and hope others will join me in supporting him in November.
