WINSLOW — This was the game Mount Desert Island senior captain Jack Sasner expected his team to play all season.

“I think we’ve had our game all season. Sometimes, and I don’t know what it is, we just didn’t play with it every game,” Sasner said. “This one, we were mentally prepared right when the kickoff started. We played 80 minutes.”

Sasner scored two goals, and the No. 11 Trojans upset No. 6 Winslow 3-0 in the preliminary round of the Eastern B boys soccer tournament Saturday afternoon.

MDI, now 6-7-2, will play at No. 3 Presque Isle (11-2-1) on Tuesday. Winslow finished the season at 12-3-0.

Sasner’s first goal came with just over 26 minutes left in the first half after the Black Raiders had controlled play for most of the first part of the game. Sasner’s shot from the right of the goal was high and just out of the reach of Winslow goalie Alex Berard and found the upper left corner of the net.

With 23 minutes left in the second half, Sasner scored again, this time coming from the left and hitting the lower right corner of the net with a hard, low shot. Afterward, Sasner had trouble recalling specifics of either goal.

“It was one of those moments where you just put your head down and kicked it. I was lucky enough they went in,” Sasner said.

For Winslow, it was a game of missed chances. The Black Raiders controlled play throughout the first half, but could never get a shot on net. The Black Raiders’ best scoring chance came just over four minutes into the game, when James Fowler hit the crossbar. Fifteen minutes into the first half, Winslow couldn’t get a shot on an empty net when MDI keeper Kendrew Van Gorder slipped and fell. Other shots sailed high or wide.

“I think the whole game, we had a lot of missed opportunities,” Winslow coach Aaron Wolfe said. “The post, shots in the six that we missed. Just wide a couple times. It just wasn’t our day. We had tons of chances (and) we just didn’t capitalize.”

Winslow had five corner kicks, all in the second half, but failed to convert on any of them. The Trojans’ final goal came with 1:03 left in the game when Joe Grubb slipped a header in on a corner kick.

Winslow graduates seven seniors.

“I feel sorry for our seniors, who’ve had a great career. They did a great job. They’ve won a lot of games,” Wolfe said.
