District Attorney Maeghan Maloney coasted easily into a full four-year term as the top prosecutor in Kennebec and Somerset counties.

Her challenger, independent Kevin Sullivan of Gardiner, was listed on the ballot, but opted against any campaigning and fundraising.

Voting results were slow to arrive Tuesday night, but Maloney outpolled Sullivan by about 100 votes in each of the handful of towns that reported results early. In some towns, the margin was double. In Farmingdale, Maloney topped Sullivan 835-413 and in Mount Vernon it was Maloney 509, Sullivan 214. Maloney took Augusta 5,257 to 1,576.

Maloney, 43, a Democrat and former one-term state legislator from Augusta, put out signs, marched in parades, and generally kept her name in front of voters.

She had been elected two years ago to fill the last half of the Evert Fowle’s term after he left to take a post in the judiciary.

Maloney took a vacation day Tuesday and spent it at polling places in Somerset and Kennebec counties, ending with Waterville.

“For me, Election Day is Christmas and Easter combined into one,” she said. “I love meeting all the people. I could never stay away from the polls on Election Day.”

She is looking forward to a full term as district attorney.

“I’m excited to be able to grow the programs that I’ve started,” she said. “Without the additional time, I’m afraid they would have died.”

She listed those as the electronic monitoring of defendants in domestic violence cases, the alternative substance abuse program and the restorative justice program.

“I’m also excited to continue working with the veterans court,” she said. “Expanding all those programs and really cementing them as part of our criminal justice system is what I’m looking forward to.”

On Tuesday morning, Sullivan was in Kennebec County Superior Court representing a client.

He said he had voted the previous week.

“My goal was to give the people of Kennebec and Somerset counties an option on Election Day,” Sullivan said of his challenge. “The people have made their decision of district attorney for the next four years. We now move forward with a lot of work to do. I thank all of the voters for their efforts and support.”
