WATERVILLE — State and local authorities are investigating a possible arson and whether a Molotov cocktail was involved in a Wednesday night fire at a residence.

No one was injured in the fire at 84 Front St., and police said there was little damage because neighbors extinguished it before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Authorities on Thursday released few additional details about the ongoing investigation, but Police Chief Joseph Massey confirmed that local firefighters and police as well as the state fire marshal’s office were investigating the case as a possible arson.

Massey and Fire Chief David LaFountain both said authorities are looking into whether the fire was started by a Molotov cocktail, a glass bottle filled with gasoline or another accelerant with a piece of cloth or paper used as a fuse. Use of such an explosive device had not been confirmed.

Massey said authorities will continue investigating and that no charges had been filed. A spokeswoman for the state fire marshal’s office wouldn’t comment Wednesday, citing the ongoing investigation.

Two firetrucks and a rescue unit were dispatched to the fire at 9:17 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.
