I am an eighth-grader at Messalonskee Middle School. Veterans are a symbol of our country, and they fight for our freedom. I am writing to you because I think that veterans should be honored and cared for more in our country.

Nearly 50,000 veterans are homeless right now. When veterans come back from serving in the military, some of them come back without money and the needed resources to support themselves. I think that when they come back from serving they should get the care and supplies they need to live a normal life.

The Veterans Resource Center of America has provided help to 10,000 veterans in need. The VRC helps veterans find housing, jobs and get scholarships for education. Thanks to them, low-income veteran families move to more permanent housing solutions. We need to increase the number of resources, such as the VRC, so all veterans can get help.

According to the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, most veterans who are homeless are not married. When they come back, they should get the care and support from their community. Some veterans can’t even take care of themselves, and they don’t have enough money to pay for health care. They need to be taken care of, they help us earn and keep our freedom, so we should help them.

I would also like to invite all veterans to Messalonskee Middle School Veterans assembly at the Messalonskee High School Performing Arts Center in Oakland on Friday. All veterans are invited. Veterans who would like to come are asked to be at the PAC at 7:45 a.m. to be escorted into the PAC to watch the assembly.

We want to thank them for their service.
