AUGUSTA — Three people face arson charges in indictments handed up Friday by a grand jury sitting in Kennebec County.

Ronald J. Oberst, 48, of Winthrop, faces two counts of arson and one each of theft by unauthorized taking and operating without a license.

Oberst, who returned to the area from Tucson, Ariz., in May, is accused of setting a fire on May 31 to a home on Pine Knoll Road in Winthrop. A family living in it was forced to flee.

Charles S. Reed, 62, of Monmouth, is accused of arson in an April 30 fire that destroyed his mobile home at West Village Trailer Park in Monmouth.

A man who called 911 to report that a Clinton mobile home was on fire on his property was indicted Friday on two charges of arson in connection with the April 25 blaze.

James H. Simonson, 54, who lives in a house at 774 Main St., where the blaze occurred, is accused of starting the fire with the intent to destroy the property of Kenneth Crommet, the mobile home owner, and with recklessly endangering a person or property.

No one was injured in the blazes.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
