AUGUSTA — More than 60 soldiers, veterans and supporters recently participated in the 15th annual Veterans Day Road March, beginning at the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Capitol Park and traveling to the VA Maine Healthcare System at Togus, according to a news release from event organizers.
Fifty-seven marchers carried Summit Project stones, each represented a Maine military member killed while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Upon arrival at the VA hospital, the rocks were placed in a glass enclosure which will serve a mobile exhibit around the state.
Legionnaires, legion auxiliary members and Legion Riders also participated. Volunteers performed a color guard and provided shuttle services to transport hikers back to Capitol Park. First lady Ann LePage was among the speakers at the event.
