BUCKSPORT — The Verso Paper Corp. mill in Bucksport is set to take the final steps of shutting down production after more than 80 years.

Company spokesman Bill Cohen says the paper mill began shutting down production on Monday and is scheduled to finish on Thursday. Cohen says cleaning, winterizing and mothballing the mill will then take most of the rest of December.

The mill’s closure is expected to put more than 500 people out of work. The mill’s workers will remain on the payroll until Dec. 31.

The company announced the closure of the mill in October. Verso said prior to the closure that the mill is not profitable.
