OAKLAND — Sophie Holmes had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Messalonskee held off Mt. Ararat 59-55 in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A season opener Friday night.

McKenna Brodeur scored five points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles (1-0) as well.

Taylor Easler scored eight points for Messalonskee as well.

MADISON 57, TELSTAR 18: Aly LeBlanc scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to the Mountain Valley Conference victory.

Sydney LeBlanc scored eight points and dished out four assists for Madison (1-0) as well. Marah Hall finished with seven points and eight rebounds as well.

Becca Howard scored 10 points to lead Telstar.

GARDINER 41, LEAVITT 24: Lauren Chadwick had 16 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead the host Tigers to the KVAC B win.

Morgan Carver, Leslie Stevens and Logan Granholm each scored six points for Gardiner (1-0).

Chantel Beels scored eight points to lead Leavitt (0-1).

BRUNSWICK 46, CONY 13: Julia Champagne scored 12 points and Madeline Suhr added 10 to lead the Rams to the KVAC A win in Augusta.

Emma Whitney scored five points to pace the Rams (0-1).

LAWRENCE 71, SKOWHEGAN 25: Sophomore Morgan Boudreau scored 18 points and Dominique Lewis added 17 as the Bulldogs cruised to the KVAC A win in Skowhegan.

Nia Irving had nine points and Paige Belanger scored eight for Lawrence, which led 25-8 after one quarter.

Eliza Bedard led Skowhegan with seven points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GARDINER 67, LEAVITT 48: Seth McFarland led all scorers with 20 points and also grabbed six rebounds and had two steals to help the Tigers earn a KVAC B season-opening win in Turner.

Brian Dunn had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for Gardiner (1-0). Brad Weston grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with six points and four assists.

Leavitt (0-1) was led by Corey Caito with 18 points.

BRUNSWICK 63, CONY 55: Alex Bandouveres scored 15 points as the Dragons earned the KVAC A win in Augusta.

Taran Payne added 15 points for Brunswick (1-0).

Cony (0-1) was led by Tim Cusick with 25 points and Liam Stokes with 15.

MT. ABRAM 71, CARRABEC 62: Carl Trafton scored 21 points and Quintin Hannah added 22 to lead the Roadrunners to the MVC win.

Isaac Vaillancourt led the Cobras with 13 points while Sean Vartanian added 14. Dustin Crawford chipped in with 15 points for Carrabec as well.

MCI 50, WATERVILLE 30: Austin Tolman scored 14 points to pace the Huskies in the season opener in Pittsfield. Devon Begin scored eight points to lead the Panthers.
