MONTPELIER, Vt. —The Peace Corps says Vermont is continuing to lead the country in the per capita production of Peace Corps volunteers.
In statistics released Tuesday, the Peace Corps says that’s Vermont’s rate of 7.8 volunteers per 100,000 people leads the nation.
The same statistics found that New Hampshire ranks fifth in the country and Maine, ninth.
Vermont was followed by the District of Columbia, Washington and Colorado.
The Burlington-South Burlington metro area ranked third in the country in the production of volunteers. The University of Vermont holds the fifth spot for medium-sized schools while Middlebury College ranks 14th among small schools.
Since the Peace Corps was founded in 1961, 1,501 Vermonters have served in the organization that sends volunteers across the world to do development work.
