January nature hikes, activities set for at L.C.Bates Museum

HINCKLEY — The L.C. Bates Museum and the Good Will-Hinckley trails are open for visits and snowshoe hikes. January family programs include Track Hikes and International Penguin Day activities. Outdoor winter walks and programs are planned as well as museum activities that explore Maine wildlife in winter.

January programs include:

• Indoor Mammal Tour at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3. Participants can explore the mammals of Maine with a museum guide and learn what kinds of adaptations they need to survive winter in Maine.

• Winter Tracks of Animals 1 is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. Those interested can explore the outdoors with snowshoes to view the traffic suddenly apparent in the snow. Participants can learn a few tips on what to look for around their home. Extra snowshoes will be onhand for visitors. If you are bringing a large group, please call ahead.

• International Penguin day will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24. Participants can explore the penguins of the museum and learn why most of the penguins of the world are now endangered.

• Winter Tracks of Animals 2 is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31. Those interested can explore the outdoors with snowshoes to view the traffic suddenly apparent in the snow. Participants can learn a few tips on what to look for around their home. Extra snowshoes will be onhand for visitors. If you are bringing a large group, please call ahead.
