WATERVILLE— The Waterville School Board unanimously appointed Sara Sylvester as chairwoman of the board during the first meeting of the year on Monday.

“After my kids graduated, I just thought I should get involved in things besides nursing, and here I am,” said Sylvester, 63, an administrator at Oak Grove Center, a nursing home, and a member of the board for about the last 10 years.

Sylvester replaces long-time school board chairman Lionel Cabana, a former business teacher at Waterville Senior High School and a member of the school board for 17 years, including 16 as chairman. Cabana retired from the school board in December.

Sylvester said her goals for the school board include stabilizing the district’s curriculum while keeping up with state changes and stabilizing the budget.

“I want to help students and also give staff the tools they need, too,” she said after Monday’s meeting. The meeting was also the first for new school board member Susan Reisert, who was elected in November to represent Ward 2.
