KITTERY — The nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Norfolk has arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to begin the inactivation process.
The Los Angeles-class submarine arrived in Kittery on Friday with a crew of 15 officers and 122 enlisted sailors.
A decommissioning ceremony on Dec. 11 in Norfolk, Va., the submarine’s namesake, marked the end of 31 years of service that included 15 deployments.
On its final deployment, the submarine traveled 30,000 miles supporting the U.S. Central Command. The crew learned halfway through the deployment that the sub would be decommissioned.
The 360-foot sub is the third Navy ship to be named for Norfolk. It was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and was commissioned in 1983 by then-Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger.
