KITTERY – The nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Norfolk is at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to begin a year-long inactivation process.
The Los Angeles-class submarine arrived in Kittery on Friday with a crew of 15 officers and 122 enlisted sailors.
A decommissioning ceremony on Dec. 11 in Norfolk, Virginia, the submarine’s namesake, marked the end of 31 years of service that included 15 deployments.
On its final deployment, the submarine traveled 30,000 miles supporting the U.S. Central Command. The crew learned halfway through the deployment that the sub would be decommissioned.
At Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, workers will remove the nuclear fuel, batteries, fluids and furnishings to make the sub ready to be towed to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where it will be dismantled.
