AUGUSTA — An Army officer is returning home from a post at the National Guard Bureau outside Washington, D.C., to serve as 2nd-in-command of the Maine Army National Guard.

Col. Michael J. Bouchard has been promoted to assistant adjutant general. Brent Boyles, who formerly held the post, retired last year.

A formal promotion ceremony will be held on Feb. 6.

Brig. Gen. James D. The Westbrook native joined the Maine Army National Guard in 1989 after his active duty service ended and later became an active duty soldier again in 1996 to serve at the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, Virginia.
