BATH — The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B swimming championship meet wasn’t a meet for central Maine teams to take control. But a number of athletes swam well, improving their times as they gear up for next week’s state meet.

“Almost all the kids improved their times, and that’s the main thing,” Waterville coach Bob Johnston said.

The Camden Hills girls won with a team score of 307 points. Morse was second (263) and Belfast third (193). The Waterville girls placed fourth with 125 points. Winslow finished sixth.

Morse was the boys champion, with 296.5 points. Camden Hills was second (249.5), edging Belfast (246.5). Waterville was fifth and Erskine sixth.

Belfast’s Alex Lind was boys swimmer of the meet for his wins in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke. Girls swimmer of the meet was Ann Tolan of Morse, who won the 200 free and 100 fly.

The Waterville boys competed without Emmett Demaynadier. Sick all week, Demaynadier and Johnston decided it was best to sit out the 100 fly and 200 individual medley, Demaynadier’s races.

“My coach and I decided we were going to save it for states,” Demaynadier said.

On the sidelines, Demaynadier was pleased to see teammates shave time off their personal bests. He pointed to Avery Isbell, who placed ninth in the 500 free with a time of 6 minutes, 48.94 seconds, blwoing away his previous best.

“We had an awesome 500 out of Avery. He dropped 20 seconds, which was amazing,” Demaynadier said.

Waterville’s Margaret Reisert placed fourth in the 500 free, with a time of 6:10.33. Waterville freshman Natalia Fuentes shaved 21 seconds off her 500 to finish in 7:31.99.

“I took off so much time tonight, and that was really awesome. A good way to get all that hard work to pay off. Almost everyone took off time tonight,” Reisert said.

Paige Smith of Winslow earned third place in the 50 free (27.63 seconds) and fourth place in the 100 free (1:01.00). Jessica Greeley of Winslow took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.65) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:35.95).
