WATERVILLE — A masked gunman held up the manager of the Elm Plaza Rent-A-Center outside the store Friday, stealing the store’s bank deposit bag and fleeing on foot.
Police said the robbery at the Main Street shopping center happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. after the manager, whose name was not released, had locked up for the night and was standing outside the store.
The gunman was armed with a black handgun and fled toward the corner of Main Street and Waterville Commons Drive, northwest of Elm Plaza. Police did not disclose how much money was in the Bangor Saving Bank bag.
He was described as being about 6-foot-2-inches tall and wore a black and red hunting jacket according to Sgt. Alden Weigelt of the Waterville Police Department.
State police, the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and police from Winslow were also on scene. A tracking dog was used, but the robber hadn’t been found more than an hour after the robbery.
The Rent-A-Center is at the west end of the shopping center, a few stores down from Hannaford supermarket.
The shopping plaza also has a K-Mart and several smaller stores, and the parking lot was fairly busy at the time of the robbery, observers said.
No other information was available Friday night.
