The Western Maine Play Museum in Wilton has been building fundraising momentum in the past few weeks, announcing a recent $25,000 donation by the Bass family of Wilton.

The donation by Alane Bass O’Connor, along with her parents Dick and Joanne Bass O’Connor, is in memory of her grandmother Catherine Forbush Bass, the wife of George H. Bass II. Bass was the grandson of George H. Bass, who in 1876 founded the Wilton shoe company.

George H. Bass II ran the shoe company until it was sold in the 1970s.

O’Connor said the family had dedicated the large educational room at Franklin Memorial Hospital in honor of her grandfather, George H. Bass II, and had been searching for a way to honor her grandmother, according to a press release from the museum board.

“The family considers the kitchen at the Western Maine Play Museum to be the perfect opportunity to honor Catherine Forbush Bass … because it honors Nana’s love of cooking, is geared toward children, and is located in Wilton,” according to the press release.

The museum has also received more than $1,500 in two weeks in online donations for the project. The museum board stated in the press release that the members are offering incentives for donating, like a “badge of honor” for donating more than $25 and bricks for donating between $100 and $250.

The Western Maine Play Museum is a nonprofit organization started in November 2013 to build and operate a children’s museum on Main Street that encourages learning while playing.

The museum has so far raised $110,000 toward their $750,000 goal and are trying to match a $150,000 matching grant from the Sandy River Charitable Foundation.
