More than 35 locations plan MOFGA education programs

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, local adult and community education programs and community sponsors will offer Grow Your Own Organic Garden workshops at more than 35 locations.

MOFGA representatives will host sessions from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, (with alternative dates in some communities, listed below). Instructors are experienced MOFGA farmers or gardeners from the region. Learn the basics of soil science and how to enrich soil and manage nutrients to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost; of rotating crops and incorporating green manures in the garden; distinguishing between cultivated plants and weeds; and basic weed, insect and disease management.

These workshops are open to the public and to people of all gardening skill and experience levels. They provide the skills and knowledge needed to transition from conventional to organic gardening. Most locations charge a $5 materials fee to cover the cost of handouts.
