The U.S. post office on Main Street in Wilton will be closed indefinitely because of structural problems and damage to the roof, a postal official said Thursday.

Other post offices, including Jay’s, will take over Wilton duties for the time being.

The office was closed Tuesday evening and was not open at all Wednesday, according to Melissa Lohnes, spokeswoman for the Boston office of the U.S. Postal Service.

“It is being looked at. We don’t have any official word on what it is,” Lohnes said by phone Thursday afternoon. “We do believe that the structural damage is caused from the roof, but we’re still waiting to hear more about it. We don’t have a timetable for when we will return to that office.”

All post office box mail will be delivered to the post office at 158 Main St. in Jay.

Other business, including buying stamps, can be done in Jay, East Wilton, Livermore Falls, Dryden, East Dixfield or Farmington, Lohnes said.

“Once the building is deemed safe again, we will return to that office, but I just don’t have a time frame for that yet,” she said.
