The Portland Flower Show, which held its gala opening Wednesday night, has announced the winners of the show’s awards for best garden design. This year’s theme is Storybook Gardens.

A panel of six judges picked the winners, said Joanna Sprague, the show’s coordinator.

The evening’s most prestigious award, Best of Show, was given to three companies that collaborated on the garden’s design: Robin’s Nest Aquatics of Hollis, O’Donal’s Nursery of Gorham and Hill View Mini Barn of Etna.

Sprague said the other major award, the People’s Choice Award, will be announced Sunday, the last day of the five-day show at the Portland Company complex, at 58 Fore St. The People’s Choice award goes to the exhibit that gets the most votes from people who attend the show.

Umbellata Ornaments of Lyman won three awards Wednesday night, including the John Skillin first-timers award for the exhibit judged to have the best overall score among new exhibitors.

The flower show will run through 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 775-4403 or visit the flower show on Facebook.
