A 28-year-old Richmond man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stealing a trash barrel full of copper he had stripped from the basement of a vacant home in Litchfield.

Maine State Police charged Ryan Cray with burglary, theft and failing to submit to arrest after a resident of Pleasant Pond Road in Litchfield saw Cray walking on the private road early Tuesday afternoon and noticed a vacant home had a trash barrel outside that was not normally kept there, according to a news release from the spokesman of the Maine State Police.

Police are crediting the Pleasant Pond Road man with discovering the home had been broken into, leading to the arrest of Cray and the recovery of the trash barrel of copper and bolt cutters. The resident called 911 and provided a detailed description of a man and his vehicle, which Richmond police recognized, according to the report. Richmond police waited for Cray to arrive at his home, then detained him until state troopers arrived.

Cray, who allegedly broke into the basement of the home to steal the copper, was taken to the Kennebec County jail.
