SKOWHEGAN — A former state prison inmate who was convicted of the beating death of a Madison man almost 15 years ago has been indicted by a Somerset County grand jury on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Bruce W. Morris, 66, of Bingham, could be going back to prison for violating his probation on a 2001 manslaughter conviction after police say they found a loaded handgun, beer and marijuana March 8 at his home during a routine probation check. As a convicted felon, Morris is not allowed to use or possess any type of firearm.

The Skowhegan office of Probation and Parole has filed a motion with the court to revoke Morris’ probation. He has not appeared in front of a judge on the probation motion.

Morris was convicted in the March 2000 bludgeoning death of Karl T. “Stone” Goeman.

Andrew Benson, who as an assistant attorney general prosecuted that case in Somerset County Superior Court, is now a judge in Skowhegan District Court and has taken himself off the case.

John Alsop, who represented Morris at trial in 2001, is now an assistant attorney general prosecuting major crimes.

In a plea agreement reducing the charge from murder to manslaughter in 2001, Morris was sentenced to 25 years in prison with all but 12 years suspended and six years’ probation when he was released. Morris was released from the state prison on Nov. 12, 2010, and is on probation.

The gun charge is a class C felony and is considered new criminal conduct. His probation could be revoked in part or in whole for having a firearm, meaning he could return to prison to serve the suspended portion of his sentence, which is about 12 years.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but is an indication by the grand jury that there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial.

Also indicted by the grand jury is Stephen Lowe, 39, of Palmyra, on charges of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl. The events are alleged to have occurred Jan. 21 and Jan. 22, in Pittsfield. Lowe is alleged to have paid the girl $80 and a set of headphones to keep the abuse a secret.

A Dexter man also was indicted on charges of robbery, burglary and theft for his part in a home invasion and stabbing in Harmony Oct. 13. Jay Belanger, 28, joins Gregory V. Hickey, 52, in connection with the alleged crimes that sent the home owner to the hospital with stab wounds to the abdomen..
