Voters in the town of Detroit on Saturday will consider spending $10,000 to reshingle part of the salt and sand shed roof.

The annual Town Meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at Town Hall on South Main Street. Elections will be 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, also at Town Hall.

Town Clerk Kathy Walston said Tuesday that if voters approve reshingling part of the salt and sand shed roof, the money for that would come from the general fund.

In Friday elections, incumbent selectman Brett Salisbury is running unopposed for his seat and incumbent Elizabeth Ross, a member of the board of directors for School Administrative District 53, also is running unopposed for her position.

Walston said no major increases are being proposed in the 35-article warrant.

Voters will be asked to consider spending $65,550 for a snowplowing contract to include use of salt and sand; $46,000 for street lights, Town Hall, general assistance and legal services; and $45,311 for solid waste disposal, according to Walston.

They also will be asked to spend $33,000 for the fire department, an increase of about $2,000 over last year, she said. The hike is because of increases in basic operating expenses for the department, she said.

Voters will consider spending $15,000 for general maintenance of roads. They also will be asked to set aside $5,000 for a future town revaluation, which town officials hope to have done in 2018, according to Walston. She said voters for the last eight years have voted to set aside $5,000 each year for that purpose.

Detroit typically draws less than two dozen voters to the Town Meeting, which usually lasts about an hour, according to Walston.

“We’ve been really lucky if we get 15 to 20 people to come out,” she said. “Attendance has been very poor the last four or five years. There’s really not much to argue about. Everything is everyday operating expenses for the town.”

Sumner Jones will moderate the meeting as he has for the last 10 years or so, according to Walston, who has been town clerk about 17 years.

“He keeps it moving quickly,” she said.
