When it comes to pursuing a college education, Liam Fowler doesn’t like to limit his options.
The Casco Bay High School senior has applied to 12 colleges and universities, both public and private, covering a wide range of tuition prices and levels of exclusivity.
“Money will definitely be a consideration,” Fowler said. “I didn’t apply to a few schools because they didn’t offer merit-based scholarships.”
His chosen schools include Vanderbilt University, Duke University, the University of Maine and the University of Massachusetts.
Fowler said he achieved good grades in high school and performed well on his college entrance exams but is a little bit concerned about his lack of extracurricular activities.
“That’s one of the reasons why I applied to so many,” he said. “Some of these kids out here are just perfect students.”
Aside from the cost, Fowler said his other criteria are size, location and athletic programs. He wants to attend a larger school that is relatively close to home, where he can play a variety of intramural sports.
“The college lifestyle I wanted was a little bit crazier than high school with a lot going on,” he said.
