The York County Sheriff’s Office says it has issued a summons to a 16-year-old girl who was caught on video beating another girl at Massabesic High School in Waterboro.

York County Sheriff William L. King announced the decision to pursue an assault charge against the teenager late Monday night in a news release. He did not name her because she is a minor.

King said the aggressor assaulted and pinned another 16-year-old girl to the ground on the morning of March 9 on school grounds. The assault appears to have taken place on a paved area outside the high school.

The video, which King believes was filmed by another student, showed several students walking past the girls as the aggressor kneeled over her victim and tried to punch her in the head as she lay on her back. The video was posted on the Internet.

During the attack, no one intervened on behalf of the victim. King said the victim suffered bumps and bruises. She was examined by a school nurse, but did not need to be hospitalized.

The victim has obtained a protection order that prohibits her alleged assailant from contacting her or being near her except for incidental contact while they are at school.

The 16-year-old girl who was issued the summons is scheduled to appear in court in June. King did not give a specific court date.
