GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine women’s lacrosse team scored 13 unanswered goals between the end of the first half and first 28 minutes of the second to pull away for a 16-7 win over the University of Maine-Farmington at Hannaford Field on Thursday.

Kents Hill graduate Lauren Lessard led the way for USM (1-5) with five goals and Anh Nguyen chipped in with three goals and two assists.

Ayla Allen had three goals for UMF (0-4), while Patty Smith finished with 16 saves.

SOFTBALL

UNION (N.Y.) 3, COLBY 2: The Mules jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and remained in front through the fourth, but could not hold on in a loss to the Dutchmen in Clermont, Fla.

Grace Farnkoff and Skylar Labbe each had a pair of hits for Colby (3-5).

Later in the day, the Mules suffered another defeat when they dropped a 5-1 decision to Lawrence. Robin Spofford went 2-for-2, had two stolen bases, a sacrifice and run scored in the loss.

UNION (N.Y.) 8, THOMAS 0: The Terriers could not get anything going against Dutchmen pitcher Allyson Staats and were no-hit in a five-inning loss to Union in Clermont, Fla.

Staats struck out three and walked one in picking up the win, and also helped her own cause by going 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Faith Robinson took the loss for Thomas, giving up eight runs — five of which were earned.

The Terriers closed out the day with an 11-10 loss to Carthage in the afternoon.
