Statewide winners of the 2015 National History Day competition gathered at the Cultural Building atrium in Augusta Tuesday to be recognized for their achievement.

More than 300 students and teachers from 36 middle and high schools took part in the contest, according to a press release from the museum. National History Day is an academic program that began in 1980 to promote critical thinking, research and presentation skills. The program is a partnership between the University of Maine and the Margaret Chase Smith Library with support from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Historical Society.

Among the winners who will be eligible to compete in the national contest are Isaac Bell of Stepping Stones Montessori School in Chelsea; Alyssa Salley, Maggie Pono and Brooke Rogers of Skowhegan Area Middle School; Sami Clark of Lawrence High School; and Jordan Zimba, Elizabeth Copeland and Sierra Thibodeau of Lawrence High School.

A list of all winners can be found on the University of Maine website.
