A fire Thursday morning destroyed a pickup truck parked at Thomas College.

The fire, which broke out before 9:30 a.m., also damaged a car parked next to it.

Waterville fire Captain John Gromek said the truck’s owner, a student, had parked it near Laurette Ayotte Auditorium at the college, which is on West River Road, and the fire was reported about 10 minutes later.

The cause of the fire was difficult to determine because there was so much damage to the vehicle. Gromek said the truck’s owner hadn’t had any issues with the vehicle.

“Obviously, it’s in the engine compartment,” Gromek said. “Most likely, it’s something mechanical.”

Waterville police and campus security also responded to the fire, which firefighters extinguished quickly.
