FAIRFIELD — A man emerged from a car and began doffing his clothing, then ran naked down Route 104, prompting police to take him into protective custody.

Motorist Robert MacArthur said the man “was running around the road naked and everything.”

“He was totally naked. He didn’t even have socks on,” MacArthur said.

Fairfield Police Chief Tom Gould said Friday, “The actual call came in as a naked man running down the center of the road. He was right in front of The Big Apple.

“He was on the Norridgewock Road running toward Fairfield from The Big Apple, removing his clothing. By the time we responded, there he was, clothed.”

Gould said the man, whom he would not identify, was put into protective custody, was taken to a Waterville hospital for observation and was not charged.

MacArthur said he was driving south toward Fairfield Center on the highway, which is Norridgewock Road in Fairfield, near The Big Apple store when he saw the man. Wood Street, where MacArthur lives, is directly across from the store.

“I just thought, ‘What the heck is going on here? Something’s wrong,” he said.

MacArthur said he reported the naked man to police, got the license plate number of the car from which he’d emerged and drove into the store parking lot to wait for police to arrive.

Gould said by the time officers arrived just after 10 a.m., the man had put his pants back on and was sitting in his car. The car was towed away.
