Gardiner girls lacrosse coach Chad Kirk had few expectations for the season opener Friday afternoon in Cumberland against Greely.

“I had no idea what to expect,” he said. “It’s not like we’ve been on a lot of fields.”

Friday marked just the fourth time this spring the Tigers played or practiced outside a gymnasium or off a parking lot.

“We played at Morse, (North Yarmouth Academy) and up at Thomas (College),” Kirk said. “That’s all the time we’ve had outside. It’s been tough because being able to practice on a field makes it a lot easier.”

Greely, which reached the Western B quarterfinals last season, pulled out a 13-7 victory Friday.

“I can’t complain,” said Kirk, whose team went 8-5 last spring and reached the Eastern B quarterfinals. “Can’t complain at all. We really played pretty good.”

The Tigers play their home games in a fish tank that is Hoch Field. With more rain in the forecast, Kirk acknowledges more gym time could very well be in the future.

“I mean, what can you do?” he asked. “If we get a lot more rain we’ll be in the gym forever. It’s tough because in the gym you can only do so much. You can pass and catch, work on some transition. I throw cones down to show them where they should stand. If we can’t get on our field we’ll start looking around to find some turf. We’ll see.”
