I have served on the budget committee in Oakland for two years, and we have managed to keep the budget flat. The newspaper article on April 7, “Belgrade board opposes proposed RSU 18 school budget,” should be heeded.
I attended the meetings here in Oakland, and of the $1 million increase in spending, 97 percent goes to salaries and benefits for the staff. Student enrollment is down by 50 students, which at $11,000 per student should save $550,000.00. RSU 18 also chooses to ignore the state-recommended teacher-to-student ratio.
I would recommend that all towns in RSU 18 oppose the budget. I did not receive a 3 percent increase in my Social Security this year.
