Of course, Skowhegan High School should drop the name “Indians” from their sports team. All such names — Squaw Mountain, Redskins, Braves — anything that reminds us of the Indians and, therefore, of the horrendous injustice suffered by Native Americans at the hands of invading Europeans — should be obliterated.
Even the word “Indian,” which came about because Columbus thought he had landed in India, should go. Otherwise, we will never be able to forget this black mark that stains America’s past.
Once that is done, we can start on the history books.
