Skowhegan’s high school has a racist mascot. The honor and tradition the word Indian is said to bestow is not received as an honor by the very people the townpeople say they honor — the Indians.
The people of the Wabanaki Federation have said the school’s use of this name is racist, but the school board just voted to keep it after hearing many requests to remove it.
The high school has now formally chosen to display offensive and racist speech. I’m thinking the board doesn’t fully realize how important its decision was.
