Mattress fire in New Portland calls out two departments

NEW PORTLAND — Two fire departments were called to the scene of a home fire at 29 Hancock Pond Road early Monday morning after a resident who was smoking in bed accidentally lit a mattress on fire, said New Portland Fire Chief Kip Poulin.

The damage caused by the fire was limited to the mattress and bedding and had mostly been extinguished by the time firefighters from Anson and New Portland arrived, Poulin said. The fire was reported at 2:39 a.m. and crews were at the scene for about an hour.

A young man burned his wrist putting out the fire, but there were no other injuries reported, Poulin said. He did not have the name of the homeowner.

ARRESTS

IN OAKLAND, Monday at 9:04 a.m., Janelle A. Gagnon, 42, of Fredricks Corner Road, Norridewock, was arrested on Kennedy Memorial Drive on an arrest warrant.

IN SOMERSET COUNTY, Sunday at 6:17 p.m., Christopher Fiore, 50, of Harmony, was arrested on a charge of domestic violence assault.

9:19 p.m., Tori Micah Luce, 25, of New Portland, was arrested on charges of violating condition of release, driving to endanger and operating after suspension.

Monday at 1:51 a.m., Brittany Elizabeth Horton, 20, of Madison, was arrested on two warrants for an unpaid fine and failing to stop and provide information.

2:08 a.m., Matthew Winston Gordon, 26, listed as a transient, was arrested on three warrants for unpaid fines and charges of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and trafficking in prison contraband.

IN WATERVILLE, Sunday at 10:05 a.m., Michael J. Derosby, 42, of 19 Colby St., was arrested on Elm Street on a charge of violation of conditions of release.

IN WINSLOW, Sunday at 9:47 a.m., Eric Vincent Nelson, 30, of Halifax Street, was arrested on Whipple Street on an arrest warrant.
