Colby students torch furniture to celebrate graduation

WATERVILLE — The Waterville Fire Department was called to Colby College early Sunday morning to extinguish a pile of burning furniture that had been set on fire in front of a dorm as part of a graduation celebration, said Captain Jeff Brazier of the fire department.

The fire was reported at 1:46 a.m. by a college security officer, Brazier said. “The officer had arrived on scene and spotted a large fire on the walkway of the dorm. A large crowd had gathered around the fire to celebrate their upcoming graduation,” Brazier said.

The furniture, which included couches and wooden pallets, belonged to the students and was not school property, he said. Waterville police also responded to the scene.

“There’s a ton of things that are unsafe about it,” Brazier said. “Obviously they don’t have a hose, they don’t have anything for suppressing a fire, so it is a dangerous situation. It’s been quite dry out lately, and we haven’t had the greening up yet that we’ve hoped to see this spring.”
