Christina Leeds, spokeswoman for Amtrak, said the Amtrak Downeaster will be getting inward-facing video cameras installed in its locomotive fleet, but not right away.
Amtrak’s current plan calls for installing the cameras by the end of 2015 in its fleet of 70 ACS-64 locomotives which serve the Northeast corridor between Washington, New York and Boston.
Leeds said Amtrak is still in the process of developing a plan for installing the cameras in the rest of its locomotive fleet, including the Downeaster’s three diesel locomotives that serve the corridor between Brunswick, Portland and Boston.
Patricia Quinn, Executive Director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which oversees the Downeaster operation, said it is highly unlikely the cameras will be installed this year. Quinn said she has not been informed as to when the cameras might be installed.
