WINSLOW — A vehicle slid on a rain-covered road and smashed into a telephone pole on China Road Tuesday night, sending three passengers to an Augusta hospital.

There were five people in the vehicle when veered off a turn at the intersection near Pattee Pond Road at about 8:50 p.m. and rolled over, striking a telephone pole, according to Winslow Police Detective Ron McGowen. The vehicle was traveling west on Route 137/ China Road toward Winslow when the crash occurred.

The driver of the vehicle was being held in police custody Tuesday night for suspected intoxication, McGowen said.

Three passengers were taken to Maine General Medical Center in Augusta by Delta Ambulance. It was unclear how serious the injuries were Tuesday night, McGowen said.

Police did not release names or ages of the passengers, but McGowen said both juveniles and adults were taken to the hospital. Wet, rainy conditions are believed to be a factor in the crash, McGowen said.
