Voters from Regional School Unit 18 will gather Thursday to decide whether to adopt a final spending plan to send to a referendum at the end of the month.

At the meeting, voters will decide whether to increase or decrease the amount of funding they want in the final budget. RSU 18 includes Oakland, China, Belgrade, Sidney and Rome.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Messalonskee High School performing arts center in Oakland.

The RSU 18 school board has proposed a $34.4 million budget for next year, an increase of about 1.9 percent from last year’s spending plan.

Last month voters rejected a proposed $34.7 million budget, forcing the board to make about $292,700 in cuts. The initial budget’s failure has sparked a debate between those who want to cut spending further to prevent tax increases and others who think the education budget should be funded fully.

Thursday’s meeting will be followed by a districtwide referendum on Tuesday, June 30.
