AUGUSTA — A motorcyclist and his passenger were sent to the hospital Friday afternoon after crashing into a vehicle on Western Avenue.

The driver, James Carey, 26, of Hallowell, was going east on Western Avenue about 3:16 p.m. when he tried to pass a car turning right into the Kings Court Mall on the right, said Officer Michael Unterkoefler of the Augusta Police Department. The motorcycle hit the car on its passenger-side corner, Unterkoefler said, injuring Carey and his passenger, Katherine Marsters, 25, of Augusta.

Unterkoefler said Carey wasn’t wearing a helmet, but Marsters was. He didn’t know the nature of their injuries, but he said Carey was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center and Marsters was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Nobody will be charged in the crash, but Unterkoefler said Carey probably was going too fast.

A CMMC official said Marsters was in stable condition at 6:30 p.m. Friday and a MaineGeneral official said before 7 p.m. that Carey wasn’t in the hospital.
