Three Gardiner residents, including a baby, were injured in a head-on crash that occurred just after 9 p.m. Thursday on Maine Avenue in Farmingdale near Hill Street.

They were all taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta by Gardiner Ambulance.

Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon, of the Kennebec Sheriff’s Office, said the drivers were Betty L. Maddocks, 69, of Gardiner, in a 2006 Red Jeep Liberty; and Matthew R. Curtis, 19, in a black 2011 Nissan Versa sedan. Curtis’ son Harvey, who turned 1 on Friday, was in a child safety seat in the back seat.

Reardon said witness reports indicated the Nissan was headed north on Maine Avenue when it drove into the southbound lane; and Maddocks, who was driving south, had no time to react. Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage, according to police.

Reardon said there appeared to be no reason for a left turn at that location, because a guardrail is there.

The child was reported to have abrasions, some from the five-point child safety seat restraint, and bumps and bruises. Maddocks reportedly suffered bumps and bruises.

Maddocks was treated and released, and Curtis remained in the hospital in fair condition, according to MaineGeneral Medical Center spokesman John Begin. Begin said the hospital does not release condition reports about minors.

The accident remains under investigation.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
