A Belgrade woman was hurt when she jumped from her vehicle Friday morning as she was driving east on Taylor Woods Road and approaching the intersection with Route 11.

The driver, Sarah Runnion-Bareford, 38, of Belgrade, told police the brakes had malfunctioned.

“She lost her brakes and actually jumped out of the vehicle onto the road,” Maine State Trooper G.J. Neagle said. “The vehicle went straight through the intersection and came to rest in the woods.”

Neagle said the vehicle went down an embankment and only the taillights were visible from the road.

Members of Belgrade Fire & Rescue blocked off the northbound lanes of Route 11 while crews worked to remove the 2003 Dodge Durango from the woods. The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m.

Neagle said Runnion-Bareford, who suffered scrapes on her left leg and possibly a fractured right ankle, was taken by Delta Ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

A hospital spokeswoman said later that Runnion-Bareford was treated and released.

He said the vehicle was towed by D&R Towing of Belgrade and would be checked because of concerns about the vehicle not meeting inspection standards.
