A man charged with drunken driving after crashing his truck Wednesday evening now faces an additional charge of cultivating marijuana.

Maine State Police Trooper Chris Rogers said John Young, 54, of Litchfield, was arrested after his 1999 GMC pickup went off Hallowell-Litchfield Road about 6:25 p.m. Wednesday and struck a tree.

Rogers said Young, who was alone in the vehicle, was uninjured and walked 200 yards down the road to his mother’s house, where he also lived.

Investigators dealing with the crash and the overturned truck spoke with several of Young’s relatives, who said they were concerned that Young might be growing marijuana at that home.

Rogers said Trooper Kyle Pelletier took Young to the Kennebec County jail, having arrested him on a charge of operating under the influence, and troopers following up on the marijuana tip found 63 marijuana plants at Young’s mother’s property, some inside and some outside the house. That’s when the marijuana charge was added.

Young’s bail was set at $500, and he was scheduled for an initial hearing Thursday at the Capital Judicial Center on the charges of operating under the influence and cultivating marijuana.
