The Maine Genealogical Society and the Maine State Library have partnered to host the 2015 Maine Genealogy Fair set for Saturday, July 11, in the lobby of the Maine State Library/Museum/Archives Building, 230 State St. in Augusta. The fair, the first of its kind in the state, will bring together genealogical and historical organizations from across Maine for an “information fest,” according to a library release.
The “Brickwall Busters,” a panel of professional genealogists, will be available throughout the day to anyone seeking advice with their family history research. Staff from the state library and State Archives will provide information on their genealogy collections, and the state museum will have free admission. In addition, the Cross Café in the Cross Office Building will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for breakfast, snacks and lunch.
The Maine State Library is home to the largest genealogy collection north of Boston as well as town histories and published vital records for Maine towns and cities, and for a sizeable portion of New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada, according to the release. The library also has a respectable collection of genealogy reference and methodology materials, offers classes, and monthly programs which are open to the public through its informal genealogy club.
