A Hebron man was rescued Wednesday from the Appalachian Trail in Somerset County after he was injured on a hike in Dead River Township, according to the Maine Warden Service.

John Jutras, 64, had an injured knee and thumb and was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Cpl. John MacDonald, of the warden service, said in a news release Thursday. Jutras appeared to have fallen while hiking, MacDonald said.

Game wardens were called to the trail around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in an area just south of the Little Bigelow lean-to near Flagstaff Lake. After an assessment of Jutras’ condition by first responder Greg Drummond, of Carrabassett Valley Search and Rescue, it was determined that several people would be needed to carry Jutras off the trail, MacDonald said. The rescue took place about 1.5 miles west of East Flagstaff Road.

More than 20 people from Carrabassett Valley Fire & Rescue, North Star Ambulance, New Portland Fire & Rescue, the Maine Forest Service, Eustis Fire & Rescue, Franklin Search & Rescue and the warden service responded.

A spokesperson at the hospital said Thursday that Jutras was not there.
